What is Head Injury?
A head injury refers to any trauma to the scalp, skull, or brain. It can range from minor bumps to severe brain damage. Common causes include falls, road accidents, sports injuries, or physical assaults.
Types of Head Injuries
- Concussion: A mild traumatic brain injury caused by a blow or jolt to the head.
- Contusion: Bruising of the brain tissue due to impact.
- Skull Fracture: A break in the skull bones.
- Hematoma: Accumulation of blood outside the brain, such as:
Epidural Hematoma: Between the skull and the dura.
Subdural Hematoma: Between the dura and the brain.
Symptoms
It’s essential to recognize head injury symptoms early to prevent complications:
- Mild Symptoms:
- Headache, dizziness, or confusion.
- Nausea or temporary memory loss.
- Moderate to Severe Symptoms:
- Persistent or worsening headache.
- Vomiting or seizures.
- Slurred speech, blurred vision, or loss of balance.
- Unconsciousness or difficulty staying awake.
- Weakness or numbness in limbs.
Emergency Signs:
Call for immediate medical help if the individual experiences:
- Loss of consciousness.
- Clear fluid or blood leaking from the nose or ears.
- Unequal pupil size or abnormal eye movements.
