Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
What is Carpal tunnel syndrome?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition caused by pressure on the median nerve as it passes through the narrow tunnel in the wrist (the carpal tunnel). This nerve controls sensations in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger, as well as controlling the muscles at the base of the thumb. When the tunnel is compressed, it leads to symptoms such as pain, numbness, and weakness in the hand and wrist.
Symptoms
- Numbness or Tingling: In the thumb, index, middle, or part of the ring finger, especially when holding objects or waking up.
- Pain: Often in the wrist, hand, or forearm, which can worsen at night or with repetitive hand movements.
- Weakness: Difficulty gripping objects or performing tasks that require fine motor skills.
- Feeling of Swelling: Even when there is no visible swelling in the wrist or hand.
Treatment
- Pain Relief: Most treatments aim to alleviate discomfort and restore function in the hand and wrist.
- Improved Function: Reduces numbness, tingling, and weakness, allowing for better grip strength and fine motor skills.
- Prevention of Nerve Damage: Early intervention can help prevent long-term nerve damage and complications.
If you suspect you have carpal tunnel syndrome, consult a healthcare provider for diagnosis and a treatment plan tailored to your condition. Early treatment can prevent the condition from worsening.
