Cervical Spondylosis

What is Cervical Spondylosis

Cervical spondylosis is a degenerative condition of the cervical spine (neck) caused by wear and tear of the spinal discs, bones, and joints. It commonly occurs with aging and can lead to stiffness, pain, and restricted movement in the neck. In some cases, it may also cause nerve compression, leading to pain that radiates to the shoulders, arms, and hands.

Symptoms

  • Neck pain and stiffness, especially in the morning or after sitting for long periods.
  • Headaches, often starting at the base of the skull.
  • Limited neck movement, with difficulty turning the head.
  • Pain radiating to the shoulders, arms, or hands due to nerve compression.
  • Tingling or numbness in the arms and fingers.
  • Weakness in the arms or legs, in severe cases.
  • Loss of balance and coordination in advanced stages.

Treatment

  1. Pain Relief Medications: Over-the-counter pain relievers like NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen) or muscle relaxants.
  2. Physical Therapy: Strengthening neck and shoulder muscles to improve posture and flexibility.
  3. Hot/Cold Therapy: Applying heat or ice packs to relieve pain and reduce inflammation.
  4. Neck Braces or Collars: Temporary use to support the neck and limit movement.
  5. Posture Correction: Maintaining proper posture while sitting, working, or using mobile devices.
  6. Lifestyle Modifications: Regular exercise, weight management, and avoiding prolonged screen time.
  7. Surgical Treatment (Severe Cases): Procedures like cervical laminectomy or discectomy may be necessary for severe nerve compression.

Early diagnosis and lifestyle changes can prevent complications. If you experience persistent neck pain or neurological symptoms, consult a specialist for proper evaluation and management.
