Deep Brain Stimulation

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a surgical procedure used to treat neurological disorders by delivering electrical impulses to specific areas of the brain. It involves implanting a small device (neurostimulator) that sends controlled electrical signals to regulate abnormal brain activity. DBS is primarily used for conditions like Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia, epilepsy, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Symptoms

  1. Parkinson’s Disease: Tremors, muscle stiffness, slow movement (bradykinesia), balance issues.
  2. Essential Tremor: Uncontrollable shaking in hands, head, or voice, worsened by movement.
  3. Dystonia: Involuntary muscle contractions, abnormal posture, twisting movements.
  4. Epilepsy: Frequent, uncontrolled seizures that don’t respond well to medication.
  5. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) & Depression (In Select Cases): Severe, treatment-resistant OCD symptoms and mood disturbances.

Treatment

  1. Surgical Implantation: Electrodes are placed in specific brain regions responsible for movement or symptoms.
  2. Pulse Generator Placement: A small device (similar to a pacemaker) is implanted in the chest and connected to the electrodes.
  3. Electrical Stimulation: The device sends mild electrical impulses to regulate abnormal brain activity.
  4. Device Activation & Adjustment: Doctors fine-tune the settings externally to optimize symptom control.
  5. Regular Follow-ups: Patients require ongoing check-ups to adjust the device, monitor progress, and replace the battery as needed.
  6. Improved Quality of Life: DBS helps reduce symptoms, lower medication dependency, and improve daily functioning.
