Deep Brain Stimulation
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a surgical procedure used to treat neurological disorders by delivering electrical impulses to specific areas of the brain. It involves implanting a small device (neurostimulator) that sends controlled electrical signals to regulate abnormal brain activity. DBS is primarily used for conditions like Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia, epilepsy, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
Symptoms
- Parkinson’s Disease: Tremors, muscle stiffness, slow movement (bradykinesia), balance issues.
- Essential Tremor: Uncontrollable shaking in hands, head, or voice, worsened by movement.

Treatment

- Pulse Generator Placement: A small device (similar to a pacemaker) is implanted in the chest and connected to the electrodes.
- Electrical Stimulation: The device sends mild electrical impulses to regulate abnormal brain activity.
- Device Activation & Adjustment: Doctors fine-tune the settings externally to optimize symptom control.
- Regular Follow-ups: Patients require ongoing check-ups to adjust the device, monitor progress, and replace the battery as needed.
