Neuralgia
Neuroglia, also known as glial cells, are non-neuronal cells in the nervous system that support, protect, and nourish neurons. Unlike neurons, glial cells do not generate electrical impulses but play a crucial role in maintaining brain function. They help in repair, immune defense, and communication within the nervous system. The main types of neuroglia include astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, microglia, ependymal cells, and Schwann cells.
Symptoms
Dysfunction in neuroglial cells can lead to various neurological disorders, with symptoms such as:
- Memory loss and cognitive decline (common in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s)
- Seizures (linked to glial cell abnormalities in epilepsy)
- Muscle weakness and numbness (due to demyelination in conditions like multiple sclerosis)
- Chronic pain and fatigue (linked to glial cell inflammation)
- Neuroinflammation leading to diseases like multiple sclerosis (MS)
